This was the European Regional Qualifier for the World Cup and Romania participated for the first time ever. Our team comprised Anton, Ciprian (Coach, player- Showtime club), Gaita, Mihai and Filisan, Ionut (Lamont Sports Club). The BNP Paribas World Team Cup is the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Fed Cup and is held annually with a different nation playing host each year. Nineteen male teams battled for the single place to enter in the World Cup final which will take place in the Netherlands from 26 May until 1 June. Romania was placed  in a group with Portugal and Russia and in their first match against Portugal set up a crucial final round-robin pool tie. Anton Ciprian held off a tough challenge from Portugal’s Joao Sanona in the first singles to prevail 6-3 5-7 6-3, but Carlos Leitao kept Portuguese ambitions alive after securing the crucial points for a 6-4 6-4 win against Mihai Gaita. The doubles rubber proved even closer than the singhttps://scontent-a-vie.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1.0-9/10173776_823169144364394_1290490363_n.jpgles rubbers as Sanona and Leitao gave Portugal the lead before Ciprian and Gaita fought back for a 6-7(5) 6-2 10-5 victory. In the match against Russia the Romanian team lost 1-2 but honourably! Russia came from behind to beat Romania 2-1 in pool 3 of the men’s event after Anton Ciprian had given Romania an early lead when winning his opening singles rubber in three sets for the second day in succession. Ciprian defeated Ivan Anreev 6-1 4-6 6-2 to boost Romania’s ambitions, but Artur Saitgareev and Anreev saw Russia safely through in first position in their pool after claiming the second singles rubber and the doubles, with Saitgareev and Anreev overcoming Ciprian and Filisan Ionut 6-1 6-4.  For 5-8 place they were drawn against Ireland winning 2-1 whoich secured them 6th place overall. In their final match against Croatia for 5th place they lost 0-3 but they had played exceptionally well in their first ever BNP Paribas World Team Cup – 6th place overall in 19 teams from Europe. Congratulations!
